송창애의 현제 세계는 2004년에 그가 마주했던 한 사건의 연장이다. 2004년, 이타그 전쟁포로수용소 아부 그라이브 (Abu Ghraib)의 포로학대 스캔들, 발가벗겨진 채 쌓아올려진 인간피라미드의 사진과 마주한 것이 그것이다. “같은 인간으로서 느껴야 했던 수치감과 모멸감 ··· 심리적 혼동과 갈등이 ··· 보편적 도덕성에 대한 믿음체계와 정체성에 커다란 반향을 일으켰다.”(송창애) 그것은 송창애로 하여금 자신과 모든 인간의 마음 깊숙한 곳에 감추어져 있는 진실에 대한 궁금증, 인간과 문명에 대한 강력한 의구심, 그리고 아마도 더욱 깊은 곳에 은밀하게 고여 있는 트라우마를 확인하는 계기가 되었다. 그가 오늘날에도 여전히 몰입하는 주제인 <MæSS> 연작은 이 트라우마의 발견이 아니고선 설명할 수 조차 없는 긴 서사시다.
송창애의 드로잉들은 이중의 스펙트럼을 가지고 있다. 어느 정도 거리를 두고 그의 드로잉들을 접할 때, 그 드로잉들은 마치 한 폭의 진경산수에서 크게 달라 보이지 않는다. 톤의 변주는 적절하게 부드럽고 친숙하다. 어떤 시각적 파격이나 전위적 파행도 눈에 띠지 않는다. 하지만, 작품에 다가서면서 마주하는 진실은 조금 전까지만 해도 예상치 못했던 것들이다. 부드러운 운무처럼 보였던 것들은 다름 아닌 발가벗은 인간의 형상들이다. 유려한 조형적 조치들로 보였던 것들의 실체는 서로 뒤엉켜있는 몸의 파편들이다. 갑작스러운 반전은 당혹감과 두려운 감정을 안긴다. 이 반응까지 작가세계다. 작가는 자신의 드로잉이 보는 이의 마음에 격한 파동을 일으킬 수 있기를 원한다. 그들 모두 그렇지 않으면 깨질 수 없는, 깨어져야만 하는 세계를 각자의 마음 안에 가지고 있기 때문이다. “작품에 근접할수록 ··· 언뜻 사악한 분위기마저 감돌아 관람자들은 이내 고도로 불안한 심리적 혼동과 불쾌감 등 부정적인 감정들을 경험하게 된다.”(송창애) 송창애의 매스 연작은 관객들에게 원하지 않았던 심리적인 파장을 불러일으킴으로써 그들 자신이 속해 있기도 한, 바로 그 세계의 진실에 눈을 돌리도록 만든다.

Song Chang-ae's current world is an extension of an event he encountered in 2004. In 2004, the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, where detainees were stacked into a human pyramid with their clothes removed, confronted him with feelings of shame and disgust. "The psychological confusion and conflict that I felt as a fellow human being ... created a great resonance in my belief system and identity regarding universal morality." (Song Chang-ae) This experience became a catalyst for Song Chang-ae to confirm his curiosity about the truth hidden deep in his own and every human's heart, a strong doubt about humanity and civilization, and perhaps even trauma that lies hidden in the depths. His ongoing work <MæSS> is a long narrative that cannot be explained without discovering this trauma.
Song Chang-ae's drawings have a dual spectrum. When viewed from a distance, his drawings do not appear much different from a traditional landscape painting. The tonal variations are appropriately smooth and familiar. There is no striking visual shock or provocative spectacle. However, the truth that confronts the viewer upon approaching the work is unexpected. What appeared as soft and flowing movements are none other than the forms of bare human figures. The substance of what appeared to be graceful and sculptural is the fragments of intertwined bodies. The sudden reversal provokes perplexity and fearful emotions. This is the artist's world. The artist wants his drawings to provoke intense waves of emotion in the viewer's mind. This is because each person has a world in their mind that cannot be broken unless it is shattered. "As viewers approach the work ... they experience negative emotions such as high levels of anxiety and discomfort." (Song Chang-ae) Song Chang-ae's <MæSS> series invites viewers to turn their attention to the truth of that world, in which they themselves are included, by evoking unexpected psychological reactions that they did not intend to experience.
